Event Recap: Sunday’s weather for the Disc Dog Southern Nationals was definitely the best weather we have had in years. April’s is normally very challenging for competitors, like Saturday’s 25 mile per hour winds, but Sunday mother nature shined on us all day long. With temperatures in the low 70’s, all of the
dogwood trees in perfect bloom, and literally thousands and thousands of spectators all weekend long. It was so warm that thousands of spectators sat on the rolling 1000 foot long hillside wrapping around our competition field. Many spectators made an effort to stop by our registration booth and pass along their many thanks for such an amazing event. When I asked one of the Piedmont Park Conservancy representatives how he thought our event went, his response was “The number one question asked all weekend long was, where are the Frisbee Dogs?” Piedmont Park covers more than 6 square blocks and after enjoying the incredible arts & crafts vendors, festival food, latest musicians, and fair rides spectators would return to watch the Disc Dog competitors compete in the final rounds.
The event was live streamed on a delay at 9pm each night. Due to the hotel upload speed the video was a little choppy, but still worked well. All of the video will be shown again at www.barknetwork.com within the next month or so. Be sure to check www.barknetwork.com for the viewing schedule.
Since our Freestyle division competition was on Saturday, after the long Super-Pro Toss & Fetch competition on Sunday, we ended with the some of the competitors and staff members performing their freestyle routines in a fun filled freestyle jam session demonstration. As always this was a crowd favorite.
Over the weekend, there were a total of 74 teams who competed. The weather was so beautiful on
Sunday that the Super-Pro T&F scores were all extremely close together and nearly perfect scores were achieved by the top 10 teams.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the USDDN Disc Dog World Finals Oct 15-16, 2011 at Dellinger Park in Cartersville, GA . All of the teams who qualified will compete against teams from all over the world….USA – coast to coast, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, Poland, The Netherlands, Spain…..and yes competitors from Slovenia, Russia, Hungary, and more European countries are all competing now for invitations the the World Finals.
A special thank you goes out to all of the Greater Atlanta Dog & Disc Club volunteers and WOOF! Sports USA staff members for helping create an unbelievable weekend.
